MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) ? Facebook doesn't want to be dismissed as an Internet has-been before its social network even enters its adolescence.

In an effort to remain hip, it is infusing the focal point of its website with a more dynamic look and additional controls designed to empower its 1 billion users to sort streams of photos and other material into more organized sections that appeal to their personal interests.

The changes unveiled Thursday are an attempt to address complaints that Facebook's hub ? the News Feed ? is degenerating into a jumble of monotonous musings and disjointed pictures. This has come as users' social circles have widened from a few dozen people to an unwieldy assortment of friends, family, businesses, celebrities, co-workers and fleeting acquaintances.

That evolution requires a more nuanced approach than the computer-generated algorithms that Facebook has been relying on to pick out the most relevant content to display in each user's News Feed. The growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers equipped with high-quality cameras also is turning the News Feed into a more visual gallery, another shift that Facebook is tackling by carving out more space to display photos and video.

Facebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg hopes the makeover turns the News Feed into something like a newspaper tailored to fit the particular interests of each user on every visit to the website.

"This gives people more power to dig deeper into the topics they care about," Zuckerberg said while discussing the makeover at Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters.

By keeping Facebook relevant, Zuckerberg hopes to avoid the fate of his company's social networking forerunners, Friendster and MySpace. Those once-trendy sites quickly flamed out, largely because they didn't say attuned to the changing interest of fickle audience. Making that mistake is even more costly in an age of increasingly short attention spans and technological tools that make it easy to find some other diversion with a quick click of the computer mouse or the swipe of a finger on a smartphone.

"They needed to freshen things up," said Brian Blau, research director of consumer technologies for Gartner Inc. "This should bring a lot of cooler things" into the News Feed.

Although Zuckerberg didn't say it, the overhaul also appears to be aimed at carving out more space to show larger and more compelling ads within the News Feed as Facebook seeks to boost its revenue and stock price.

Previous tweaks to the News Feed have triggered howls of protest among Facebook's users. Hoping to minimize the grousing this time around, Facebook intends to roll out the changes in phases. It will probably be at least six months before everyone who accesses Facebook on a personal computer sees the revamped News Feed, the company said. New mobile applications featuring the changes should be released within that time frame too.

The transition is likely to be completed before Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday next February.

The facelift is likely to be more jarring for those who only visit Facebook on a PC because it incorporates some features already deployed in the social network's mobile applications for smartphones and tablet computers.

The new features will enable users to choose to see streams of content that may feature nothing but photos or posts from their closest friends, family members or favorite businesses. Or they can just peruse content about music, or sports, as if they were grabbing a section of a newspaper. Other newspaper-like changes will include lists of events that users' social circles have flagged for the upcoming weekend and other summaries meant to resemble a table of contents.

Facebook still intends to rely on algorithms to select some material to feature on the main part of the News Feed, much like newspaper editors determine what goes on the front page.

The additional space being devoted to photos and video is an acknowledgement how dramatically the composition of Facebook's content has changed during the past 16 months. About 50 percent of the posts on News Feed now include a photo or video now, up from 25 percent in November 2011, according to Facebook's data.

Bigger pictures also will give advertisers a larger canvass to make their marketing pitches. Facebook is hoping marketers will seize the opportunity to develop more creative ways to entice and intrigue customers so advertising can become a more acceptable fixture on the social network.

More than anything else, the changes are meant to make Facebook a more fun place to hang out.

"This is all about keeping people engaged," Blau said.

Although Facebook's website remains one of the Internet's top destinations, there have been early signs that the social network is losing some of its pizazz, particularly among younger Web surfers who are starting to spend more time on other fraternizing hubs such as Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram, a photo-sharing site that Facebook bought for $521 million last summer.

A phenomenon, known as "Facebook Fatigue," was recently documented in a report from Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project. The study found that about 61 percent of Facebook users had taken a hiatus for reasons that range from boredom to too much irrelevant information to Lent.

That's a worrisome trend for Facebook because the company needs to ensure that its audience keeps coming back so it can learn more about their interests and, ultimately, sell more of the advertising that brings in most of the company's revenue.

"I don't think it had turned into a crisis, but Facebook was probably seeing some internal data that was telling them they needed to do something," said Greg Sterling, a senior analyst for Opus Research.

Facebook has been struggling to find the right balance between keeping its fun-loving audience happy and selling enough ads to please investors who want the company to accelerate its revenue growth.

Wall Street seems to think the redesigned News Feed might be a step in the right direction. Facebook's stock gained $1.13, or 4.1 percent, to close Thursday at $28.58. The shares still remain 25 percent below the $38 that they fetched in Facebook's initial public offering last May.

The mobile-friendly redesign of News Feed underscores the company's intensifying focus on smartphones and tablet computers as more of its users rely on those devices to interact on the social network.

About 23 percent, or $306 million, of Facebook's advertising revenue came from the mobile market during the final three months of last year. Zuckerberg thinks more than half of Facebook's revenue will be coming more mobile devices within the next few years ? a goal that should be easier to reach if the redesigned News Feed turns out to be as compelling as he envisions.

Georgia Tech rallies past No. 6 Miami 71-69

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? The Miami Hurricanes are running out of chances to win the Atlantic Coast Conference title outright.

They came up short for the second game in a row on Wednesday night, when Marcus Georges-Hunt followed his own miss with a tip-in at the buzzer, and Georgia Tech rallied past the Hurricanes 71-69.

The No. 6-ranked Hurricanes (23-6, 14-3 ACC) have one more shot at their first outright men's basketball conference championship when they play Clemson in the regular-season finale Saturday. Miami also could back into the outright title if second-place Duke loses Saturday at North Carolina.

The Hurricanes didn't envision things going down to the wire, not when they won their first 13 league games. Now they've lost three of their past four, and flagging defense is the biggest problem.

"This loss definitely hurts," senior Julian Gamble said. "Hopefully it hurts us enough to realize we have to get back to defending at our very best. I know we're going to fix the problem."

Already assured of a share of the title, the Hurricanes went into the game against Tech with championship T-shirts ready to unveil, and scissors on hand for cutting down the nets.

Then they squandered a 13-point lead in the second half.

"They deserve a celebration," Yellow Jackets coach Brian Gregory said. "I'm just glad it wasn't against us."

Georgia Tech (16-13, 6-11) beat a Top 25 team for the first time since March 2010. The Yellow Jackets became the first team to win at Miami this season.

"It's tough," Gamble said. "You expect to win. But when you let a team get confidence and they start making shots, it's tougher and tougher to guard them down the stretch. You have to give them credit, because they hit some really tough shots."

The near-sellout crowd, subdued for much of the night, came alive late in the game. As the Hurricanes' lead dissipated, coach Jim Larranaga waved his arms and screamed "Let's go," desperate for defensive stops.

"We've told the guys, all you have to do is let up a little bit, and guys start making shots against you," Larranaga said. "Our defense needs to be much better. When you take your foot off the pedal, it's hard to get it back."

Miami led 45-32 early in the second half. Gamble's three-point play with 12 minutes to go made it 56-45 before the Yellow Jackets rallied, taking the lead on Chris Bolden's fast-break layup following a steal with 3:38 remaining.

After a basket by Tech's Daniel Miller's made it 69-all with 2:14 left, each team misfired. Robert Carter Jr. intercepted a pass by Durand Scott to set up the final possession with 35 seconds left.

Georges-Hunt drove into the lane with 5 seconds to go and threw up a one-hander over Kenny Kadji that bounced off the rim. Georges-Hunt and Carter both appeared to get a hand on the rebound, but the tip-in was credited to Georges-Hunt for only his second basket of the game.

"He just put a shot up there, and then the ball just gets tipped around," Gamble said. "Honestly I don't even think one of their players tipped it in. I think it was one of our guys.

"It was kind of like being in disbelief, seeing the ball go in the basket and see the red light like that."

Bolden scored 21 points for Tech and went 4 for 8 from 3-point range. Miller added 17 points and five rebounds.

"I don't think many people thought we had a chance to win this game," Gregory said.

Tech stayed close by shooting 8 for 18 from 3-point range, including 6 for 10 in the second half. The narrow victory was a big turnaround for the Yellow Jackets, who had lost four league games by five points or less.

"We executed very well down the stretch," Bolden said. "We lost some games we could have won this season, but the lessons we've learned paid off tonight."

Kadji had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Hurricanes. Scott had 17 points. But the Hurricanes went 5 minutes without a basket down the stretch and shot 36 percent in the second half, and as a result they fell to 13-1 at home.

Sports shrink boosts Ogilvy's Masters bid

AAP

After largely ignoring sports psychologists for his entire career, Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy has revealed one is part of his resurgence.

Ogilvy recently hired Julie Elion on the recommendation of neighbour Jim "Bones" Mackay, the long-time caddy of Phil Mickelson, who has also used her services.

And he says the intellectual stimulation of psychology is working wonders.

The 2006 US Open champion turned around a tough start to 2013 with a second-place finish in last week's Honda Classic, catapulting him from an eight-year low world ranking of 79th to 47th, into this week's World Golf Championships tournament and within reach of a Masters berth next month.

But Ogilvy says it's not the normal golf-related sports psychology he's gained benefit from, rather a more holistic approach from Elion that has helped calm his non-tournament world.

"We had a chat and have had a few more since then and it's been really good actually," said Ogilvy.

"I was brought up on quite a lot of sports psychology at the Victorian Institute of Sport but, really, the basic sports psychology isn't for me.

"This is really more general psychology that's helping me, I would say. It's less golf-specific and more sensible life thinking.

"I wasn't sure the standard golf issues were for me, but this is broader than that and more interesting to me and therefore better for me."

Ogilvy explained his issues related to "Monday to Wednesday" rather than the Thursday to Sunday of tournaments themselves. With a more settled approach to family and to practising golf, he's feeling much healthier overall.

World Golf Championship events are limited fields, with just 65 in the mix this week, meaning no cut and a great chance for Ogilvy to score more valuable world ranking points as the Masters invitation cut-off date to be inside the world top 50 looms on April 1.

Ogilvy has played every Masters since 2006, making each cut, with a highest finish of tied 4th in 2011 and finishing no worse than a tie for 39th, making him as good a chance as any to be the first Australian to win a green jacket.

First, he has to get there.

"It's been on my mind really all year," he said.

"This is probably the most points I'll play for between now and the Masters so it would be obviously great to win the golf tournament but a consolation prize would be to have a strong finish and lock up the Masters - that would be pretty good.

"I'm thinking about it, and I'll use it as a motivation."

Home Business Presentations: The Key to Your Success | Market ...

Let?s start off by setting the tone right away ? building this business in the homes should be considered a Market America law. Many things have changed since the early 90?s when Market America burst onto the scene. Technology has improved, networking has gotten easier and long gone are the days of sending in paperwork.? But one thing that will never change is building home-to-home, city-to-city, and state-to-state.?

Now, I am not saying that one-on-ones?aren?t?effective?and that the only way you can build a successful business is by doing every meeting in the home. However, I am telling you that in order to achieve massive momentum, set proper duplication and create a BV generating machine, you will need to do them.

Alright, now that we have established that Home Business Presentations are non-negotiable, let?s go over some tips on how to do them effectively:

The meeting must be done in a?new person?s home. I often hear people say, ?Cheyn, don?t worry, I host a HBP at my place every week. This takes the pressure off others.?? What?! We want pressure on the new person! You might as well call your HBP a UBP.? The psychology behind it is important.? The new person will only bring one or two people to your house, but when it?s in THEIR house they must make many phone calls and feel the pressure of making it a packed event.? This is a good thing, trust me.

Keep all distractions and problems at home. ?If the event is open to other business owners on your team and their guests (hint hint), make sure they are coached ahead of time to leave ALL negative circumstances at home. There is nothing worse than a room full of guests and a UnFranchise? owner who had a bad day, is complaining about his job, and having one of his guests rescheduling and ?hoping? this business works.? Shut them up or kick them out.

Start on time. I learned this from Jim Winkler; it doesn?t matter who your guests are, you must be respectful of the people who came on time and start on time no matter what.

Have fun and encourage or push new business owners to hold the clicker.? They used to say, ?He who holds the marker makes the money.?? We?ve moved forward a couple years and now it?s the clicker.? Let them gain posture and confidence by sharing our business plan.

It?s all about the guests. As soon as the meeting is over, go and talk to the guests immediately. This is not the time to go and talk with other UnFranchise? owners or socialize with friends. Focus on their needs, ask good questions, and if they?re not ready to become a business owner set up a follow-up for within the next 24-48 hours.

I challenge everyone reading this to go and book one Home Business Presentation in someone?s home who you?ve personally sponsored for within the next 10 days.? If you haven?t personally sponsored anyone yet do it in your home.? If a senior business partner can?t help you with it, do it yourself, take ownership of your business and be proud to represent our company.? Remember, you put your stamp of approval on this business. If it?s good enough for you it should be good enough for anyone you know. Have fun and build in the homes!

Now it?s your turn; comment below and let me know how your HBP went, I would love to hear about your experience!

Republicans unveil government funding measure

(AP) ? Republicans controlling the House moved Monday to ease a crunch in Pentagon readiness while limiting the pain felt by such agencies as the FBI and the Border Patrol from the across-the-board spending cuts that are just starting to take effect.

The effort is part of a huge spending measure that would fund day-to-day federal operations through September ? and head off a potential government shutdown later this month.

The measure would leave in place automatic cuts of 5 percent to domestic agencies and 7.8 percent to the Pentagon ordered by President Barack Obama Friday night after months of battling with Republicans over the budget. But the House Republicans' legislation would award the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments their detailed 2013 budgets, giving those agencies more flexibility on where money is spent, while other agencies would be frozen at 2012 levels ? and then bear the across-the-board cuts.

The impact of the new cuts was proving slow to reach the broader public as Obama convened the first Cabinet meeting of his second term to discuss next steps.

The Pentagon did say it would furlough thousands of military school teachers around the world and close commissaries an extra day each week. And Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the spending cuts were causing delays in customs lines at airports including Los Angeles International and O'Hare International in Chicago.

Obama said he was continuing to seek out Republican partners to reach a deal to ease or head off the cuts, but there was no sign that a breakthrough was in the works to reverse them.

The new GOP funding measure is set to advance through the House on Thursday. It's aimed at preventing a government shutdown when a six-month spending bill passed last September runs out March 27.

The latest measure would provide a $10 billion increase for military operations and maintenance efforts and a boost for veterans' health programs, but would put most the rest of the government on budget autopilot. Military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq would be cut to $87 billion ? down from $115 billion last year ? reflecting ongoing troop withdrawals from Afghanistan.

"It is clear that this nation is facing some very hard choices, and it's up to Congress to pave the way for our financial future," said bill sponsor Harold Rogers, R-Ky., chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. "But right now, we must act quickly and try to make the most of a difficult situation. This bill will fund essential federal programs and services, help maintain our national security, and take a potential shutdown off the table.

Senate Democrats want to add more detailed budgets for domestic Cabinet agencies but it'll take GOP help to do so. The House measure denies money sought by Obama and his Democratic allies to implement the signature 2010 laws overhauling the health care system and financial regulation.

After accounting for the across-the-board cuts, domestic agencies would face reductions exceeding 5 percent when compared with last year. But Republicans would carve out a host of exemptions seeking to protect certain functions, including federal prisons and fire-fighting efforts in the West, and to provide new funding for embassy security and modernizing the U.S. nuclear arsenal. The FBI and the Border Patrol would be able to maintain current staffing levels and would not have to furlough employees.

The legislation would provide about $2 billion more than the current level to increase security at U.S. embassies and diplomatic missions worldwide. Last September, a terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

A project to repair the Capitol Dome in Washington could stay on track, and NASA's space flight budget would be protected from the harshest effects of the automatic cuts, known in Washington as a sequester. An initiative to upgrade the Coast Guard fleet would be funded as well.

The across-the-board cuts would carve $85 billion in spending from the government's $3.6 trillion budget for this year, concentrating the cuts in the approximately $1 trillion allocated to the day-to-day agency operating budgets set by Congress each year. Those so-called discretionary accounts received big boosts in the first two years of Obama's presidency when Democrats controlled Congress but have borne the brunt of the cuts approved as Obama and Republicans have grappled over the budget.

Both Democrats and Republicans for months have warned the cuts are draconian and would slow the growth of the economy and cost hundreds of thousands of jobs. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, for instance, says they would slow the economy by 0.6 percent and cost about 750,000 jobs.

Obama presided Monday over the first meeting of his new-look Cabinet in a sobering climate of fiscal belt-tightening, urging humane management of spending cuts for communities and families that are "going to be hurting."

"We can manage through it," the president told reporters. Obama and members of his Cabinet had been warning for weeks that the cuts would be painful, but the fact is they will be slow to take effect, with the first furloughs of government workers not due until next month. Cuts to many programs may go unnoticed entirely.

The White House budget office's 83-page sequestration order was released Friday evening, detailing the cuts to more than 1,000 separate government accounts, big and small. Cuts of 7.8 percent that are set to strike defense accounts include $5.2 billion for construction at Army bases. Other accounts are far smaller, like $32 million to operate and maintain the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Each agency is supposed to apportion the cuts equally to each "program, project and activity" within the broader accounts, which gives agency heads some flexibility since it's up to them to define what that means. And it's not clear what recourse others would have if they disagreed with an agency's choices.

"That leaves it pretty much to the administrators in the agency in which that account falls to determine how he's planning on applying it," said G. William Hoagland, a budget expert with the Bipartisan Policy Center. "I don't know that anybody's going to be held accountable if some administrator defines a project the way he wants to define it."

RESTAURANTS AND FOOD IN CORK: Food and Drink Spotting

Food and Drink Spotting

Foll?in No Added Sugar Jams
Couldn?t have been better timed by the folks at Foll?in. A couple of samples of their new No Added Sugar Range of jams arrived in the post this morning, just as my previous marmalade reached the end of the jar. Luckily, they had included Marmalade and that pot got an immediate test! And passed, with flying colours.

Like the jams in the range, the marmalade has no sugar added. Only the natural sweetness of concentrated grape juice is used. This natural grape juice sweetness produces a delicious fresh taste! And that trademark tang of the orange is still there. And the blackcurrant is brilliant also, a terrific balance of tasty fruit and flavour

The No Added Sugar range includes that Orange Marmalade and the following jams: Blackcurrant, Blackberry, Raspberry, Strawberry, Rhubarb & Vanilla and Apricot. Must get my hands on the Blackberry (my favourite of the regular range) and also on the Apricot which has won the Gold Medal at the UK Great Taste Awards!

Health & Nutrition: When it comes to eating healthy, Foll?in No Added Sugar and Salt range of preserves and relishes are very convenient for those wishing to reduce the salt and sugar content of their diet. They are also recommended for diabetics wishing to use a no added sugar jam or marmalade. The Foll?in No Added Sugar/Salt Range are 100% natural, made from fresh fruit prepared meticulously by hand and contain no added sugar, no artificial colours or preservatives and are sweetened naturally with grape juice. They are also gluten free.

?15 grams of Foll?in No Added Sugar jam or marmalade only contains approximately 25 kcal and 5 grams of carbohydrate. Compare this with a normal jam or marmalade where a similar amount (15 grams) contains approximately 40kcal and 10 grams of carbohydrate.?

For lots of info on Foll?in Preserves (they also do some great relishes), and more info from their consultant nutritionist Niamh O?Connor, check out their website here . They also have a lively Facebook page with lots of recipes (just in case you thought jam was something you just spread on bread) and the link is https://www.facebook.com/FollainIrishPreserves?fref=ts

Celebration Stout

I am constantly trying to find an ale that I can really call my own but, almost effortlessly, I keep finding great stouts. The latest is the Porterhouse Celebration Stout (Imperial Irish Stout), available in bottle (33cl) in Bradley?s. North Main Street, Cork.

This is just the job. It comes with a lasting creamy head with a smooth flavoursome body and quite a dry finish. What?s not to like? Well, maybe a bigger bottle. Then again, it is 7% abv.
