Home Energy Efficiency and Your Insulation | Saving Energy at Home

Nov 9, 2012 by DRESblog

Energy for heating and cooling our homes accounts for more than 50% of the energy used in the average American household. Inadequate or poorly installed insulation and air leakage are some of the leading causes of energy waste in most homes. Proper insulation can save you money and make your home more comfortable. The right amount of insulation will help your home maintain a uniform temperature in every room, and will keep your walls and floors warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Why and Where Should I Insulate My Home?

If your home has little or no insulation at all, heat will evaporate faster causing your heating system to work harder and less efficiently. Properly installing the right amount of insulation will allow you to use your heating and cooling system less, keeping your house more energy-efficient. Areas of your home like attics (if your home has one) and windows and doors can all be a factor in heat loss. Any area of the house located near doorways to the outside should be carefully inspected for air leaks or improper insulation. Sealing off any gaps, cracks or holes by windows and doorways will insure your home?s insulation is working at its optimum level.

If your home happens to have a basement or crawlspace, you should check to see if the ceiling of that area is insulated, which will insulate the above floor. Insulating these areas of your home is paramount in helping to maintain a more comfortable temperature throughout the rest of your home. Even if there is carpeting on the floor above, cold air can still seep into other areas of the home. This insulation will act almost like a barrier, effectively keeping the cold air from rising.

It?s Just Air, What Harm Can It Do?

Homeowners may also encounter a more serious concern if their home is not properly insulated; moisture and condensation accumulation. These problems will occur when warm air hits cold surfaces, turning the vapor into a liquid form. Moisture can cause a variety of other problems like mold and mildew that could lead to potentially hazardous health risks for you and your family. Moisture and condensation could also lead to serious damages to the home?s foundation, thus weakening its structural integrity.

It?s not uncommon for your energy savings to more than cover the cost of the insulation within the first year, which is important as utility rates go up. Dr. Energy Saver Solutions is an authorized Dr. Energy Saver dealer offering the best in energy saving opportunities. Their highly trained team will complete a home energy audit to find any possible areas where air or heat may be seeping out. Once the audit is finished, you will have a personalized plan to save you money and keep your home as energy efficient as possible. Contact Dr. Energy Saver Solutions today for a free estimate for insulation or another service and enjoy a healthier, more comfortable home this winter.

Why Apple's Stock Is Down - Business Insider

?

Apple's stock has entered "bear market" territory.

It's down 20% from its September 21 intraday high of $705.07, according to Bloomberg data.

Why is the stock on a big losing streak? A bunch of reasons.

One theory being advanced by analysts is that investors are selling shares because they think capital gains taxes are going increase during President Obama's second term.

Another reason is that Foxconn leader Terry Gou said, "It's not easy to make the iPhones. We are falling short of meeting the huge demand."

This quote has a few implications for Apple.

The first, and most obvious implication, is that Apple is not going to have enough phones to meet demand. Therefore it's going to miss on iPhone estimates for the quarter.

Before the iPhone 5 was released, analysts were whispering of about a monster holiday quarter for Apple. They were talking about Apple selling 50 million iPhones. Apple's best iPhone sales quarter was last holiday quarter when it sold 37 million iPhones.

But since the iPhone 5 came out and Apple has struggled to meet demand, estimates have been coming down. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster cut his iPhone forecast by 4 million.

Apple is an iPhone company. So anything that affects sales of the iPhone is going to affect the stock.

But what about the iPad Mini? Shouldn't it make up for falling iPhone sales?

It's selling well, but its a mixed bag if you're an investor. On the one hand Apple is protecting itself from losing sales to smaller tablets by Google and Amazon. On the other hand, the iPad's average selling price is going to collapse even further. And the iPad profit margin will get smaller, bringing down Apple's overall profit margin.

So, even if the iPad Mini is a monster hit, its impact on total sales will be limited. In fact, Munster at Piper didn't adjust his iPad revenue number after the iPad Mini came out. After Apple announced iPad Mini sales, he said, "units may increase driven by iPad Mini, but have a slight cannibalization effect, which, when factoring in the lower average selling price, would result in revenue unchanged."

Returning to the iPhone supply issue, there's another angle to the story.

Tim Cook's specialty is supposed to be supply chain management. He's supposed to be able to forecast iPhone manufacturing. The fact that he got this wrong is not good.

Typically, Apple has a measured product roll out for new gadgets. With the iPhone 5, Cook decided to go with a big product roll out. This gave investors reason for optimism. They thought Apple was going to be able to manufacture boat loads of iPhone 5s, otherwise, why spread the supply thin?

Apple misjudged its ability to make the iPhone 5. And now it can't meet demand.

This isn't a problem if consumers just delay their purchases of iPhone 5s. But, there's a theory being advanced by analyst Walter Piecyk at BTIG that people won't delay purchases of the iPhone 5. Either they will buy someone else's phone, or they will wait for the iPhone 6. If they wait for iPhone 6, then Apple misses out on sales until next year.

In isolation, this wouldn't totally demolish the stock.

But, with the aforementioned tax issue, last week's executive turmoil, and the fact that no one sees Apple releasing a new industry defining product at any point in the near future, suddenly you get a company with oodles of cash, good sales and profit growth diving into a bear market.

Detroit - Claims About Sale of Flood-Damaged Cars Aren't True ...

Detroit - In the days since Superstorm Sandy, an alarming prediction has flashed across the Internet: Hundreds of thousands of flood-damaged vehicles will inundate the nation?s used-car market, and buyers might not be told which cars have been ruined.

Not true, according to insurance-claims data reviewed by The Associated Press. The actual number of affected vehicles is far smaller, and some of those cars will be repaired and kept by their owners. The dire predictions are being spread by a company that sells vehicle title and repair histories and by the largest group representing American car dealers.

They claim the number of cars marred by Sandy could be larger than when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005 and damaged more than 600,000 vehicles. But an AP analysis of claims data supplied by major insurance companies shows the total number of damaged cars is a fraction of that.

The companies - State Farm, Progressive, New Jersey Manufacturers and Nationwide - have received about 31,000 car-damage claims.

?It?s not anything near what we?re talking about in the Katrina situation,? said James Appleton, president of the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers, a statewide association of more than 500 dealers.

Frank Scafidi, a spokesman for the National Insurance Crime Bureau, an insurance company group that monitors fraud and other trends, concurred, saying insurers monitored by his group are logging far fewer claims than they did with Katrina.

?It doesn?t translate to there?s going to be 2, 3, 400,000 cars out of this thing just because this is such a huge geographic storm,? Scafidi said.

Because many communities are still cleaning up from the superstorm, more claims are bound to come in. But 10 days after Sandy, the rate is already starting to slow. And many of these cars will have relatively minor damage unrelated to water. They?ll be fixed and returned to their owners.

About 14,000 new cars were also damaged by Sandy while they sat on docks in the New York area awaiting shipment to dealers. But most of those vehicles won?t end up on sales lots. Automakers will have severely damaged cars crushed because they don?t want their brand name hurt by substandard vehicles circulating in the marketplace.

To be sure, flood-damaged cars can be a serious problem. Once a vehicle is dried out, the damage may not be immediately apparent, so the car can often be sold to an unsuspecting buyer.

Beneath the surface, the water can damage computers that control everything from the gas pedal to the entertainment system. Saltwater, like that from Sandy?s storm surge, is especially harmful, causing corrosion in electrical and mechanical parts that can pose problems for years.

Companies like Carfax, a Centreville, Va., provider of vehicle-history reports, stand to benefit if more buyers are worried about the risk of purchasing a flooded car. The company charges $39.99 for a single report, although it also contracts with dealers and manufacturers, so many reports cost less. About 170 million reports are viewed each year.

Carfax, a privately held subsidiary of the R.L. Polk & Co. automotive data firm, put out a news release Tuesday speculating that Sandy?s toll on cars would exceed the damage left by Katrina.

In an interview, company spokesman Larry Gamache said early indications were that more vehicles could have been damaged in the densely populated Northeast than were damaged by Katrina in 2005 along the more sparsely populated Gulf Coast. He estimated that half of them, more than 300,000, would find their way back onto the market as used cars.

?I think it?s partly due to the breadth of the storm and the intensity of the storm and where the storm hit,? Gamache said.

A spokeswoman for Experian, which runs a Carfax competitor called AutoCheck, said the area that got blasted by Sandy has 9 million registered cars, far more than in the Gulf region struck by Katrina.

On Wednesday, the National Automobile Dealers Association put out a statement estimating that 200,000 or more flooded cars could be resold as used.

The trade organization warned that the storm could crimp the supply of clean used cars, potentially driving up prices. But its estimate was based on reports from third parties that showed 600,000 cars were damaged in Katrina and that Sandy would cause about one-third of the dollar damage from Katrina.

?There was not an incredible amount of science behind it,? conceded Jonathan Banks, executive automotive analyst with the NADA Used Car Guide.

Katrina overwhelmed low-lying areas of the Gulf Coast, including New Orleans, which is below sea level, causing widespread flooding. Many people in Katrina?s path didn?t evacuate, and car dealers didn?t have many options to protect inventories.

In hard-hit New Jersey, flooding from Sandy was mainly confined to a strip along the coast from Atlantic City to New York, and most people evacuated those areas, Appleton said.

In the western part of the state, ?unless a tree fell on your car, your car wasn?t even at risk,? he said.

Chris Basso, another Carfax spokesman, said the company relied on an estimate from a trusted industry source in putting out its news release. He said it was just an estimate, and the final number won?t be known for a while.

?All we?re trying to do is make sure people are looking out for these cars,? he said. ?Because eventually they?re going to make their way back onto the road.?

Regardless of the predictions, thousands of flood-damaged cars will certainly be resold, and buyers need to be cautious.

Unlike the automakers who destroy badly damaged inventory, dealers, insurance companies and others often resell flooded cars to recoup their losses.

If the cars were declared total losses by insurance companies, states require them to get new titles branding them as flood-damaged vehicles. But some sellers don?t disclose that, and some even move the cars from state to state to wash the branding off the titles.

So even if the numbers are far smaller than the estimates, anyone buying a used car in the coming months should check the title and repair history and have the car inspected by a mechanic. Buyers can also do their own inspection, sniffing for musty odors and checking for mud and debris under the dashboard.

?People just have to be a little smart about this,? said Scafidi, of the insurance company group. But he added, ?We don?t want to sit here and say the sky is falling.?

Bloggerparty ? James Bond Turns 50, also, American Film Market ...

Bond through the years

At 50: Bond? James Bond

In 1952, an English author, journalist and former naval intelligence officer named Ian Lancaster Fleming sat down at his Jamaican retreat which he was vacationing at and started to pen a story that would become ?Casino Royale?, the first of 14 novels and short stories featuring the fictional commander in the Royal Naval Reserve and British secret agent of secret intelligence service MI6, James Bond. The resulting work was a success with three print runs to answer demand and marked the start of a series that has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Fleming also wrote the children?s story Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang and two works of non-fiction and received acknowledgement from London based The Times as one of ?The 50 greatest British writers since 1945?. In 1954 CBS commissioned Ian Fleming to adapt his novel ?Casino Royale? into a one-hour television adventure as part of its Climax! series. The episode aired live in October 1954 and starred Barry Nelson as ?Card Sense? James ?Jimmy? Bond and Peter Lorre as Le Chiffre.

The first Bond film (set in Jamaica, W.I.), ?Dr No?, would be released in 1962 with Sean Connery (a Scotsman) setting the standard for the Bond character, and marking the start of one of the most successful franchises in movie making history. EON Productions has produced the majority of the Bond series. The 1967 Bond spoof, ?Casino Royale?, starring David Niven and the 1983 ?Never Say Never Again?, with Sean Connery in a return performance after leaving the series, were not made by EON who produce the official Bond movies. Barbara Broccoli, the daughter of the late Albert ?Cubby? Broccoli, the producer who brought Bond to the screen in 1962, maintains active control along with half-brother, Michael Wilson, in the productions of all Bond films right up to Skyfall, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the franchise. Incidentally, David Niven was the only James Bond actor mentioned by name in the text of Fleming?s novels. In ?On Her Majesty?s Secret Service?, Bond visits an exclusive ski resort in Switzerland where he is told that David Niven is a frequent visitor and in ?You Only Live Twice?, David Niven is referred to as the only real gentleman in Hollywood.

Losing weight, especially in the belly, improves sleep quality

ScienceDaily (Nov. 6, 2012) ? Weight loss, whether it's from dietary changes alone or from diet combined with exercise, can help improve the quality of sleep among people who are overweight or obese, according to a new study by Johns Hopkins researchers.

"We found that improvement in sleep quality was significantly associated with overall weight loss, especially belly fat," says Kerry Stewart, Ed.D., professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of clinical and research exercise physiology.

Stewart is the senior author of the study, which will be presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions on November 6, 2012 by lead author Soohyun Nam, Ph.D., who is now at the Yale University School of Nursing. Her presentation is titled Predictors of Sleep Quality Improvement Among Overweight or Obese Individuals: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

For the six-month study, the researchers enrolled 77 people who had type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. The participants, all of whom also were overweight or obese, were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group went on a weight-loss diet and had supervised exercise training, while the other group only had the diet intervention. A total of 55 participants completed all phases of the study.

The participants filled out the Hopkins Sleep Survey at the beginning and end of the study to identify sleep problems, including sleep apnea, daytime fatigue, insomnia, restless sleep, excessive sleep or sleepiness and use of sedatives to aid sleep. Their body mass index and amount of abdominal fat were also measured at the start and end of the study.

Both groups -- those assigned to a weight loss diet plus supervised exercise and those who only went on a diet -- lost about 15 pounds, on average. They also lost about the same amount of belly fat, about 15 percent, which was assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Although a variety of sleep problems were reported by the participants, none stood out as being the most common, so the researchers analyzed a composite score, which reflects overall sleep health. What they found was that both groups improved their overall sleep score by about 20 percent with no differences between the groups.

"The key ingredient for improved sleep quality from our study was a reduction in overall body fat, and, in particular belly fat, which was true no matter the age or gender of the participants or whether the weight loss came from diet alone or diet plus exercise," says Stewart.

Good sleep quality is important in general for good physical and mental health, as well as for a healthy cardiovascular system, notes Stewart. Depending on the cause, chronic sleep disruptions increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and irregular heartbeats. Obesity increases the risk of sleep problems.

The study was funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, grant number R01HL092280 and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, grant number UL1 RR 025005.
