Although Erick Silva has lost two of his last three fights, and is coming off a knockout loss via the left hand of Dong Hyun Kim, the talented welterweight clearly isn’t interested in having his next bout handed to him. How so? Well, it looks as though the 29 year-old wants to fight the #5 ranked Demian Maia next.
Speaking via Twitter, Silva called out Maia by saying (translation via Fighters Only Magazine):
“Hey @demianmaia, what do you thinking of making a comeback to winning [ways] against a guy who is as bad on the ground and horrible at takedown defenses as me?”
Wow. It certainly sounds like there’s more to the story here huh? Well, Fighters Only emailed Silva with the hopes of finding more out, but the 29 year-old responded by saying:
“Well, I wouldn’t like to speak too much about it J. With all the due respect for him, I got my reasons and he knows which they are. I have never lacked respect for anybody.”
Interesting. Of course, since Maia is one of the best grapplers on the planet, most would likely agree he’d have a sizeable advantage over Silva on the ground. But judging by Silva’s statement, he’s anxious to prove his ground skills and wrestling are being underestimated (and are so by Maia? ).
It certainly would be an interesting bout, although Maia could be looking to fight another top ten 170′er next, following his recent decision loss to Jake Shields.
